The Australian Gold Kangaroo is Perth Mint's flagship 1oz gold bullion coin and one of the most recognised gold coins in the world. Issued annually with a changing reverse design, it carries legal tender status in Australia and is backed by the Western Australian government.

About the Australian Gold Kangaroo Coin

The Australian Gold Kangaroo has been produced by Perth Mint since 1987, originally under the name Gold Nugget. The kangaroo motif was introduced on the reverse in 1989 and has appeared on every coin since. Perth Mint changes the reverse design each year, making each vintage a distinct collectible in addition to its role as a standard investment coin.

The coin is struck from 99.99 percent pure gold and carries legal tender status under the Currency Act 1965, with a face value of AUD $100. In practice, its market value is determined by the gold spot price plus a dealer premium. As investment-grade gold, it is exempt from GST in Australia.

Why Australian Investors Choose the Gold Kangaroo

The Gold Kangaroo is consistently the best-selling gold coin in Australia for several reasons. It is struck by a government-backed mint, which provides confidence in purity and authenticity. The unlimited mintage means supply is rarely constrained, keeping premiums competitive. And the annual design changes give each year's coin a secondary collector market beyond its bullion value.

For first-time gold buyers, the 1oz Kangaroo is an excellent starting point. It is widely accepted by all major Australian dealers as a buyback item, which means you can sell it quickly if needed. Use our gold and silver calculator to work out the current spot value before comparing dealer premiums.

Gold Kangaroo Coin Storage and Insurance

Physical gold carries storage responsibilities. Most investors keep 1oz coins in a home safe, a bank safe deposit box, or through a dealer-operated vault storage program. Perth Mint offers its own depository service called Perth Mint Certificate Program for investors who prefer allocated or unallocated storage.

If you hold gold in a self-managed super fund, the ATO requires it to be stored with an approved custodian rather than at home. Read our guide to SMSF gold investing for more on the rules.

For buyers in specific cities, our location guides cover where to buy and store gold in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.
